Over the course of her career,
cellist Maya Beiser has continued to transcend the traditional
boundaries of her instrument, reaching far beyond mere interpretation
of the classical repertoire, indeed beyond classical music
altogether, to become a creative performer drawing on a variety
of genres and influences: Eastern, Western, South American
folk music, jazz, and even rock and roll. Formerly known
as the cellist for the Bang On A Can All Stars, Beiser has
emerged as a celebrated artist receiving critical acclaim
for her solo performances and recordings. She has commissioned
and collaborated with many of the world's most renowned musicians
including Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, Brian Eno, Philip
Glass, Osvaldo Golijov, David Lang, Nana Vasconcelos, Simon
Shaheen, Michael Gordon, Meredith Monk, Julia Wolfe and Trent
Reznor.
In recent years she has collaborated
with Academy-award winning composer Tan Dun premiering his
Water Passion after St. Matthew with Helmuth Rilling's Internationale
Bachakademie Stuttgart on a live TV broadcast throughout
Europe, as well as at the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg,
and the BAM Next Wave Festival in New York. She is the cello
soloist on Sony Classical CD release of the Water Passion,
and has performed Tan Dun's Crouching Tiger Concerto with
orchestras around the globe including China Philharmonic
and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, St. Paul
Chamber Orchestra, Oregon Bach Festival, Utah Symphony, Eos
Orchestra and Sydney Symphony.
Beiser's solo concerts and performances
have been featured at major festivals and concert halls across
four continents. Her latest multimedia concert World To Come
premiered in New York as part of the inaugural season of
Carnegie Hall's new venue, Zankel Hall. Other highlights
of her World To Come tour include performances at the Kennedy
Center in Washington DC, Krannert Center in Illinois, Sydney
Festival in Australia, The Vale of Glamorgan festival in
England, Steve Reich Festival in Holland and Transart festival
in Italy.
Her past seasons'
appearances include the Lincoln Center's Great Performers
series, Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, tHolland Festival,
London's South Bank Meltdown Festival, BBC Proms, Yeats Festival
in Dublin, Adelaide Festival, Wellington Festival in New
Zealand, Settembre Musica in Torino, Jerusalem Festival,
and Prague Spring Festival. Highlights of this season's upcoming
performances include UCLAÕs Royce Hall, Kimmel Center
in Philadelphia, Cornell University and the Edison Theater
in St. Louis. She will be the featured soloist with the Philip
Glass Ensemble in a performance of Glass's Naqoyqatsi, with
concerts in Australia, Japan, Poland, Paris and New York.
Beiser
received numerous grants and awards for her commissions,
including the Rockefeller Foundation's Multi-Arts Fund, the
Koussevitzki Foundation, Meet the Composer, The Cary Charitable
Trust, and National Endowment for the Arts. She has recorded
for Koch International, Sony Classical, Cantaloupe Music,
and Nonesuch. Raised on a Kibbutz in Israel by her French
mother and Argentinean father, Maya Beiser is a graduate
of Yale University. Her major teachers were Aldo Parisot,
Uzi Wiesel, Alexander Schneider and Isaac Stern.
