Santa Rosa Symphony Selected To Participate
in The John F. Kennedy Center For The Performing
Arts New Initiative Sustaining The American
Orchestra
23 Orchestras From Around
The Nation Will Participate
Today
the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing
Arts announced that the Santa Rosa Symphony
has been selected to participate in a new
initiative to help Americaâs orchestra
managers deal with the challenges facing
many of their organizations. This initiative,
Sustaining the American Orchestra, is part
of an innovative $250,000 SBC Foundation
grant that will serve 23 orchestras from
around the nation at no cost to them.
"The world of classical music is facing
significant challenges,ä said Kennedy
Center President Michael M. Kaiser. ãWith
this initiative, we hope to provide a forum
for the 23 participating orchestras that will
benefit and strengthen their organizations"
Santa Rosa Symphony Executive Director, Alan
Silow, said, "As we look to move into
a world-class concert hall and welcome a new
music director, this program will serve as
a great platform to assist us in creating new
strategic initiatives."

The Kennedy Center's
Sustaining the American Orchestra, has four
major components:
Symposia
Over the course of two days, the Kennedy Center
will convene annual symposia during the program;
the first in November of 2005 and the second
in June of 2006. Michael Kaiser will assemble
a group of moderators to address topics of
interest to the participants, including: board
development, strategic planning, marketing,
fundraising and leadership issues. Orchestra
representatives will be encouraged to share
both challenges and best practices. Participant
teams (Chief Executive, Chief Artistic Administrator
and Board Chair) from each orchestra will discuss
strategic planning issues and develop specific
goals for the organizations during the following
months.
On-Line Sessions
Hour-long on-line sessions will be scheduled
on a bi-monthly basis for the Chief Executives
of the participating organizations. Each
session will focus on a different area of
interest to the group. Kaiser will send a
list of guiding principles related to the
topic to the participants one week prior
to the session for their consideration and
will moderate the discussions on the web.
Consultative Services
Based upon the specific needs of the requesting
organization, assistance or advice may be
provided by Kennedy Center senior staff for
specific issues related to a participating
organization. As management issues arise
between the regular on-line sessions, the
participating orchestras will be invited
to seek the advice of Kaiser directly.
Strategic
Planning
Selected orchestras may
participate in a yearlong strategic planning
process in which they are paired with a Fellow
from the Kennedy Centerâs Institute
for Arts Management. The Fellows are mid-career
professionals undertaking a 10-month intensive
arts management curriculum at the Kennedy
Center. The Fellows will research the Orchestra(s)
with which he/she is paired and will develop
(in consultation with the Chief Executive
Officer and under the direct supervision
of Michael Kaiser) a strategic plan for the
organization.
