Music For Schools
Free Concerts for Youth
Free Concerts for Youth reach more than 12,000 elementary school students annually. In addition to experiencing the grandeur of the concert hall, children are encouraged to view orchestral music as an integral part of artistic expression. Quite often, this is the student's first exposure to classical music. Many professional musicians credit attending a youth concert with inspiring them to pursue a career in music.
Elementary School Listening Program
The
Brummitt-Taylor Listening Program,
is new to the SRS Education Department, though it has been
used in thousands of classrooms in the United States and Canada
for twenty years. It is primarily intended for school wide
participation (through daily broadcasts over the school's PA
system), but it can be used in individual classrooms by special
arrangement instead. It offers ideas for incorporating music
into other core subject areas.
Its Elementary
It's Elementary is the newest education program sponsored by the Santa Rosa Symphony. Each year four elementary schools in Sonoma County are selected to receive a full range of music education activities specifically designed for that school. The highlights of this program include assembly performances featuring Santa Rosa Symphony musicians, a daily music listening program and free tickets to concerts.
Keeping Score
Keeping Score is a partnership program between the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Arts Council of Sonoma County and the San Francisco Symphony. This program offers professional development opportunities to Sonoma County school teachers to learn more about integrating music into core curriculum subjects through a series of interactive workshops.
In-School Performances
Small ensembles of professional Santa Rosa Symphony musicians perform at local schools. Visits typically include commentary, instrument demonstrations, and other enhancements appropriate to various age groups of children.
